its so annoying that a small apple has 12 net carbs. I mean its still less than a banana but jeez. I wanted a after dinner "sweet" so I decided to treat myself and made a small fruit salad with blueberries, strawberries and the smallest apple in the world but it still had a huge impact on my net carbs. But you know what? I dont give AF.. an apple is apple for pete's sake, i could have had a blizzard, sheesh.. ill go super low carb to make up for it tomorrow and Im not going to let myself feel guilty for enjoying a piece of fruit. I just needed to post that and get that out so I dont stress over that apple all night LOL, ya im a dork like that. Ill spend the whole night googling apples till i fall asleep.. I'm slacking on my water today and about half way there bc i forgot my water bottle when i went out today BUT there is still time to make it up..Other than that, today was productive and I remembered to LOG everything..

Think of all the good fiber and nutrition that come with that fruit. Great choice! The people who do the Full Plate Diet even recommend eating an apple before a meal so all the fiber in it leaves you feeling full and satisfied. So great choice!

Hey Redgirl, just want to clarify that my previous post was 100% to be taken literally, with absolutely no humor or sarcasm intended...."there are lots of things worse than an apple"....much worse are the evil Ben & Jerry duo (a small attempt at humor). Have a great day!!

@Ckworksalot: there are a couple of important points to remember. For people that are obese and diabetic, they got they way by abusing food and specifically carbohydrates, going in the opposite direction is not a bad thing....agreed, not sustainable indefinitely, but not a bad thing. When you look at fruit for instance, do not confuse the fruit we eat today with how fruit was in a "natural" state, we have hybridized virtually all major fruits eaten today to enhance the size and sweetness, i.e., sugar component of each fruit, simply put, they are all genetically modified. The food pyramid I prefer for long term maintenance is one where fruits and simple sugars are at the very top...once in a while in small amounts with the rest of the diet focused on low "simple" carb and high fat. This leaves plenty of room for complex carbs in the diet. Then once a week, a spike of simple carbs...pizza, beers, burgers, fries, etc.. There should be nothing off limits, it's just a question of when and how much.

I agree with ckworksalot I did the super LCHF in the past. Never worked for me and it had me gain so much weight. I was miserable. It made me afraid of CARBS. It took such a mental toll on me to the point if I ate a few berries I would feel guilty. OVER BERRIES! Like come on peeps. Its natural- grown in nature. And some of the LCHF diets try to sell you crap like "Atkins bars" and stuff. I am not disagreeing that low carb works. And it does for many people. But for some it doesn't. I am a prime example- the LCHF didnt work and I would binge because I needed energy. I miss fruits. I would get nauseous even 2 weeks in. Its not for everyone. And I hated how afraid I was of carbs. I finally got myself out of that mental state. Now I enjoy things when my body needs them and I never felt better (today I eat about 80g carbs a day naturally.)

as a side note....while they are tasty, your body has no need for carbohydrates at all ;-)

Be very careful on LCHF diets - they were a major contributing factor to kidney failure 15 years ago.

Lots here but I have to add that our bodies were probably meant to have fruit for that short period of time during the year when it became ripe. Though that fruit was indeed less sweet than our modern varieties, one might think of eating fruit "seasonally" as a guide for consumption. I too have experienced "fear of the carbs" but there's more to it than keeping to my plan: When I eat too many (and that's not much) I become hungry, sleepy and crabby - I don't feel good! The anxiety is justified because my intolerance leads to out of control consumption and you can add to that feelings of disappointment and hopelessness.

I do understand where both sides of the LCHF and Atkins versus balanced and high carb "diets" are coming from. I know firsthand that some folks MUST avoid carbs in order to lose weight and/or maintain healthy blood sugar levels...I also know firsthand many very fit people that need carbs (even concentrated sugar) in order to do what they do. Same arguments I see on exercise about which is better...I know some folks who hate or don't do cardio that are very fit, Northern & my wife, I also know lots of folks who are very fit (and muscular) that seldom touch a weight due to their active lifestyle (rock climbing, ski touring, etc). I guess my point is that after 55 yrs I've seen that what works for me, doesn't work for everyone and that success is measured at each individual level. Look at Phil, very amazing, no one can argue that LCHF doesn't work for him! Look at ckworksalot, his sucess is also amazing too...just a different path. So, lets agree that different things work for different folks and that we can respect each other in the process. My one pet peeve, have to get this off my chest, sorry, is when I see folks who haven't got it figured out for themselves but are experts at what others should do or not do. Sorry all for the long post, just saying I respect those who have earned it, "the proof is in the pudding".

Good job with the diet. Its all a balance, you need carbs, fat and protein in your diet. I also have chosen apples over bananas to keep my carb levels lower. I totally can relate to getting worked up over carbs of healthy fruit.

I feel your pain. The worst is when it is when I am looking at that apple, and the little voice in the back of my head says "beer has less carbs then that apple, go have a beer instead". Its what leads me into trouble.

@wyolady, please review the link here from the leading non profit organization dealing with kidney failure and it's prevention...in summary diabetes causes almost half of all kidney faulure, also unfortunately type II diabetes largest contributing cause is a high carb diet that has no offsetting exercise. Here is the link; http://www.kidneyfund.org/prevention/are-you-at-risk/diabetes.html

So Sorry for the fire storm. The Kidney failure was mine. I was at risk and didn't know it. I was not careful I didn't follow all of the directions and when I began to have some medical problems I didn't see my doctor. The diet was not the cause of my kidney failure it was a contributor according to my doctor 15 years ago! I am now more careful about many things and listen to my body as well as my physician. If the diet works for you and you have seen a doctor then Great! I wish it had worked for me. I am so sorry to have set everyone off - was never my intention! Just a warning to be careful... again my regrets.

Steven thank you for the site.

@wyolady....no firestorm, just good discussion. My sister had a failing Kidney for 9yrs until ultimately she had a transplant...during that time, it was avoidance of protein for her to minimize any work on her kidney's, which became difficult to adjust, as the day after her surgery, Dr's wanted her on over 100gms of protein per day.

Glad she received the transplant.. that can sometimes be hard. I have tried for years to stay in a range of 60 - 80 a day and my kidney is still churning along very well. Medicine and the Science behind it are changing everyday - when you get older you are set in your ways a bit but I have enjoyed learning many things on this site. Glad that the nurse recommended it to me.
