Although I gained one pound in this period, my blood sugar is under tighter control. That for me, is a victory. Now to deal with better portion control. I know that when I was less than aggressive in my diabetes, I lost weight quickly, albeit unsafely. I would rather be the tortoise in this race....

That's not to say that I wasn't disappointed when I saw that the number was higher than last time; I was. It's just that my disappointment was tempered by the knowledge that the weight will come off, but I want to do it the right way. And really, it was just one pound. For my analysis, the weight was pretty much constant.

My struggle will be next week because I will be attending a professional convention in Las Vegas, and I am sucker for a good buffet. I spoke to my PA-C about this, and she just smiled and reminded me that there are some good choices at the buffet as well. LOL

Every journey starts with a first step. Here is mine...

I struggled with my weight since I was in college. I graduated from high school at a slim 165 pounds. I used to run for the high school track team (sprints... LOL, my endurance sucks big time). I entered college and after moving into the dorms and joining a fraternity, I graduated from college at 185. By the time I graduated from graduate school I was over 200 pounds.

I have maxed out my weight at over 250 pounds back in 1993-4. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes back in 1992, and no doubt, my obesity played a big part in my risk for complications.

I have been on again, off again, in terms of my weight loss since then. This plays havoc on my diabetes since my sugars are so out of control, I would lose the weight easily, and once my blood sugars are back in the somewhat normal range, I would easily put back on the weight and then some.

I have started (three years ago) to look at the role of exercise in my health. Each year since then I have participated in the Great Aloha Run, which is a 8.1 mile run from Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu to the Aloha Stadium in Salt Lake. I haven't gotten around to actually running it yet, but I am proud that I have constantly improved my times. The first year, I did the event in 3:30. The second year, I did it in 3:00. This year, I did it in 2:42!

A friend of mine turned me on to this site and invited me to sign up to keep accountable to my goals that I have set.

I am told that as my weight goes down, I will start to feel better about myself and hopefully some of the medications that I am currently taking can start to be at a lower dosage or (fingers crossed) discontinued.

Let the journey begin....
