I sat in the hot tub this morning, reflecting on the whole diet/life style thing...the "human" diet has changed so many times..everything it seems, foods swing from being a wholesome, healthy food to a poison it seems (like eggs...carbs in general...red meat.etcetcetc)..I think back when I was under 10 years old my parents were concerned that I was "spindly" I took cod liver oil daily..I look at pictures from elementary school and I was skinny!..(I have often kidded my mother that she made all my fat cells when I was young and look at me now)..went through my growth spurt in junior high and by the 9th grade was the second biggest kid in the school..and kept increasing from there...I think now, with my vegetarian life style I can get my weight back to a comfortable healthy weight...I think Dr McDougall is right throughout history, a high starch plant based diet is the healthy human diet, meat, refined sugar, refined foods of any kind was for the rich and powerful..kings, queens, priests..and they were sick with the aliments that plague us now...heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and so on... well so much for my rambling time to eat...lol

yes plant based protein..which according to the latest research is the most digestible protein..I try to maintain a balance...all things in moderation I just looked at the tuna bites recipe on your profile..looks good going to make some today, maybe with salmon instead of tuna

Take a closer look at McDougall's plan. Carbs are not the enemy. In fact, his plan calls for 80 to 90 percent carbs. For rapid weight loss, even more. Another interesting case study is Penn Jillette from Penn & Teller. He lost over 100 pounds in 3 months following an extreme version of a similar plan, not that I would ever recommend his method.

I just don't like "plants" enough I guess. If I had a cup of Brussel sprouts and a cup of broccoli - that's less than 6 grams of protein. 2/3 cup of frozen peas is 4 grams. So I can't come up with at least 40 grams of protein unless I have chicken or fish. 10 oz of skim milk is 10 grams of protein, but my doctor wants me to give up dairy. And I just can't eat a cup or more of multiple veggies and beans to get enough protein. The doctor also said not to have protein powdered since it's a processed food. I had some I had bought at Costco and while it provided 25 grams of protein, there is also 40 mg of cholesterol. Just hard to come up with a daily plan to get enough protein without eating massive amounts of veggies which I am not crazy about anyway. And I usually only eat 2 meals a day. I bought chicken teriyaki meatballs at Costco and am using them up. Didn't realize they really are processed food and don't provide all that much protein (but they are delicious!) Once they are gone I won't buy them again.

Have been amazed to learn recently how little we actually need plant based food. I currently am using vegs more as condiments. My excellent doctor (trained in nutrition, as well) is fully behind my very high fat/very low carb/medium protein way of eating.

There are essential proteins, and essential fats, but no essential carbohydrates! As long as your get the necessary vitamins and minerals from supplements, you needn't consume carbs at all.
