TiffanyNicole89's Journal, 01 Feb 17

So today is my first day in a long time of starting a diet. Through out my past I have struggled with an eating disorder, was diagnosed with EDNOS(Eating Disorder Not Other Specified), due to I fell into more than one ED. I have always been terrified of dieting and exercise due to when ever I start I become obsessive and very unhealthy and fall right back into old habits, habits I do not want my 5 year old daughter to ever see or develop, specially due to me. I am hoping to not do calorie counting due to that's what I get the most obsessive about, and do a high protein low carb diet. I am still very scared that it will end up becoming to overwhelming and me fall back into the same old vicious cycle I used to be in, but I am so hopeful that having a diet journal and being on a site with a community will help me to not relapse. I even decided that once I get going strong in the diet and can handle the temptations of relapse that I want to quit smoking! My smoking and ED always went together because I smoked more when I was hungry, coffee and cigarettes kept me from eating much, but I am tired of smelling awful and smoke being on my clothes and around my kids (I smoke outside but it's still bad for them). I think I am the most excited about quitting smoking lol, I started smoking when I was young and grew up in a smoker household so it's really always been there but it will be so awesome to not smell like it and the smokers cough and breath.

Welcome the Fatsecret! You'll find a lot of good ideas here and tons of support. One of the things I do for exercise at home is dancing! I find a station on the TV (I have Direct TV but I think most providers have the music stations) and I just start dancing and enjoying classic rock! You could even get your 5 year old dancing with you so she has fun with her mom! Hold the baby, he may enjoy it too. Good luck here and stay strong!

Thank you!! My daughter looooooves to dance, we dance together sometimes but mostly my exercise during the day is chasing the 3 year old around and playing with him. Starting playing baseball with them so that get's me much more active in the evenings as well. Thanks a bunch for the advice and warm welcome :)

one thing to bear in mind is that you cannot exercise away weight. exercise should be seen as a health benefit and nothing more. I was a smoker for 35 years and finally just put them down. no pills patches or gum. don't count calories, count carbs. as long as your carbs are low, you can pretty much full up on fat and protein.

I don't want patches or pills or anything like that, I think it's best for me to quit the hard way. I mostly want to exercise this time so I can tone up problem areas while losing weight.

Welcome! Good luck on the new way of eating, and quitting smoking! I quit smoking several years ago, and quit the "easy way" apparently, lol. I used Nicorette lozenges. They were minty, lasted forever in my cheek (like a half hour or more), which kept me from munching. Plus, the minty taste was much, much better than tasting like an ashtray, haha

Lol yeah tasting like an ashtray is just awful. I chew regular gum quite a lot to help me concentrate so that will help me. Also going to get sunflower seeds to help me out. Thank you!

Have you looked at High Fat Low Carb and Intermittent Fasting. Have a look at dietdoctor.com. It's hard to get obsessed about eating mainly fat. It is filling though - and a good way to teach your kids to eat. Real food - as little as possible processed food and no sugar.

Thank you, Minitata. I will check it out! Yes desperately need a way to help my kids eat better, 3 year old claims he doesn't like "food" (anything he doesn't like is food, but stuff he likes isn't food to him).

Welcome to the site! I would suggest that if the idea of too many changes at once is overwhelming, focus on one or two changes at a time. As you're ready you can add more changes. I don't know your eating habits but just staying away from processed foods, refined carbs, and sugar (including watching for added sugar in foods) would likely make a big difference for you without necessarily needing to count calories. Wishing you lots of success!

That's what I was figuring too, so I am waiting on starting quitting smoking until I get myself used to the diet (giving myself a month from today) and starting off slow on exercising, 2 times a week for now. Thank you :).

Welcome, Tiff - love the profile pic! I've never been a smoker so can't advise but I've heard from others it's tough giving up so you have my heartfelt support on that. No one diet suits anyone so while I agree with Minitata and tend to do HFLC, read up if you get chance and see what other options are around and experiment with what suits you. We didn't gain this excess weight overnight so it sure as hell isn't going overnight. I agree with your comment about your kids though - they need to learn proper food and sensible eating, not fads and diets. Best of luck with your journey and with keeping those around you fit and healthy while you help yourself :)

Phooka: Thanks! It's a little old (last year) but basically same weight, I don't like taking pictures so I don't have many haha. No I know I didn't gain it over night, been gradually gaining since high school but gained most after my first pregnancy and it just stuck at 250 then gained another 10 with my son and gained the rest from being lazy. Yes I think it is very important it to try and get them eating better, but we had been trying but it wasn't fair because we weren't eating or living healthy. Thanks a bunch for the advice and the warm welcome!
