Took a tour and job assessment for a new job opportunity today. Part of me hopes I get it, and part of me doesn't. I want it because I need a job, duh, and this would be a good one. Another part of me doesn't want it because they're throwing junk food, soda, and full-size candy bars at you CONSTANTLY. The breakroom alone had 2-3 fully stocked vending machines for sodas, 3-4 more full of snacks and junk food, and a fully stocked FREE soda fountain available to all employees, all day, FOR FREE. The company give people a mug (not sure it's size or whatever), and you're allowed to fill it constantly throughout the day. There were also baskets and containers full of candy on every spare desk, countertop, manager's station, everywhere.

Every paycheck is handed to you personally each pay period, accompanied with a full size candy bar. The little waiting room I was in for a few minutes was stocked with bottled water, full size candy bars, and chilled cans of soda. It was EVERYWHERE, but the facility itself was surprisingly clean (other than being a bit cluttered because they're moving around and rearranging things, there wasn't garbage lying around, no stains on the carpet, that kinda thing).

I'm not sure I want to work for a company that's constantly throwing my worst food vice at me for free and even providing paraphernalia. I'm usually pretty good at avoiding temptation but when stress and frustration get to me enough, like today's fast food indulgence, I turn to crap food and soda for comfort. I don't want to regain the 30-35lbs I worked so hard to get rid of. Now, if this place provided a full gym with unlimited access AS WELL AS all the crap food, I'd feel better. If only...

Yes ! I agree they NEED a gym! Do they sell or promote candy or something? Why do they promote the sugar so much? I agree it would be tough to avoid all day every day BUT if you just do not start you will not get the cravings back.

It's a utility billing company, that's the thing. I'm sure it's just used to keep morale up and everything, but damn, there's gotta be a better way to do that. Also, all of the vending machines operate on a special debit card thing that doesn't charge you money at the point of sale, it accumulates and just deducts it from your paycheck every time. So I could see it being handy for that one time you forget your lunch or something so you can get something to eat, but otherwise, that's a bad plan. They also get super discounted meals from two local restaurants ordered in, they set it up a few days or a week ahead of time, have people pay like $5, and get a HUGE meal from one of these places on some designated day. It's a utility billing company, and they're throwing food at their employees nearly constantly.

WOW - that is kind of weird. They better have good health insurance for all the obesity and diabetic issues they may be creating! I hope you do get a job - and one that will reinforce your good work so far.

I don't know anything about their insurance or anything yet, but really, they better. I could just avoid the break room entirely, that wouldn't be too hard, really. But it's still just insane the amount if junk food that was so readily available. I'd maybe indulge in the one candy bar with each paycheck, one every other week isn't gonna ruin me and it's nice to celebrate getting paid, but I'd never use the break room facilities.

Good luck with the job hunt, whether your opportunity to work for Willy Wonka works out or not. :)

Wow, that is crazy. But maybe you could make suggestions if you worked there (eventually) for healthier fare. Willy Wonka, that's funny! Kind of true! It does sound like they care about employees morale (just showing it in weird way).
