MimiMeirah's Journal, 25 Mar 14

Feeling really bad, longer than a month ago - on Valanetine's day - my lower back got injured due to some weight lifting with wrong form. Since that my lower back is not OK at all.

I kept going back to the gym after a few days rest, when I felt a little better, and unfortunately my injury got worst. I mean it always came back and my results got much worse in the gym, so I was and I am still disappointed.

I went to see a doctor, my general practitioner. She is kind and nice, but without any X-ray or CT, she said that I have SI joint pain and I should stop with my exercise regiment for a while. This is my second week out of the gym, and I am really depressed. I am not sure there are no discs involved in my injury, I might need to figure out where and how to get a CT or MRI scan, but here in The Netherlands, my GP needs to give me a referral, but she does not think I need any of these scans.

I keep taking NSAID drugs for the inflammation, and I feel a little bit better. However, I do not dare to go back to the gym yet. I want to be healthy and 100% again. I miss my workouts, some of my friends suggested me to sign up for yoga or pilates classes, but I just cannot do those. I appreciate people who love those movements, but I am very bad at them, and I only enjoy CrossFit. I know for that I need to pay more attention to my form, and care less about timing or good results. I promised to myself in the future I will do that... I won't force the RX workouts, I will scale down some of my workouts and lifting weights in order to save my form.

I am annoyed, because of my back. In the last couple of weeks I was eating all the bad foods and it might sound strange, but at least I really enjoyed their taste. Yes, they were my comfort foods. I do want to be someone who loves to eat clean and never thinks of bad foods, but I do. I guess people who say that food restrictions never work are right. Now time to get back on track, but I might need to try a different approach, when it comes to my diet. I need to find my motivation again.

Check out Startingstrength.com. It is a good source of weight training information, and has a decent forum for support from other lifters. Including female lifters. do not keep a log there, but do go there quite a bit for information. On that site you can find information on the Bill Star protocol for lower back related injuries/pain. I have known more than a few who have used it and had success in pain relief. It is a high rep, low weight deadlifting regimen which will help by getting those sore areas flush with blood.

Not sure if anyone else has already posted this, but jogging (on track or treadmill) works wonders for back problems. Working abs also helps. Give it a try.

Hi Pippy, I think back massage indeed a great idea, but until I do not exactly what is involved in my injury I try to avoid massage. I was doing foam rolling and trigger point massages with a lacrosse ball, and it did not help for the inflammation. At first I want to get rid of the inflammation and hopefully get an accurate diagnosis too. Thanks for your suggestion! It looks like back pain is a hot issue for many of us.

Geezer thanks so much for the link, it seems to be a really good website. I will read it through and I will try the Bill Star protocol for lower back injury. Thanks again, it is a website, which interests me a lot.

Libertino85, after my first back injury I did to realize that jogging was great, because I did not feel any pain. Although, I do hate running, because I am not fast enough. In my gym my buddies know that running and burpees are my enemies. Everybody were surprised by that I was running happily many rounds outside. So I do agree, it helps. However, I was stupid enough to go back and to give it a try to the 14.3 CrossFit Games Open workout (deadlifts with increasing weights and box jumps were involved for time) and that really re-injured me. After this incident my general practitioner said that she think I have SI joint pain, and she said that I re-injured my SI joint. I do not know, but after 14.3 running did not feel OK, even with walking I was struggling for a couple of days. Now, I feel better so I am sure I will incorporate running into my workouts.

I'm constantly injuring my Sciatic Nerve when I do heavy squats. It's really frustrating to have to stop working out when injuries occur. Therapist showed me that jogging (not necessarily running) and abdominal work is some of the best treatment. Anyway, keep it up. You'll eventually be back to normal :)

Have you gone to a chiropractor? They don't really "pop" backs anymore. I fell and hurt myself, and it knocked my jaw out of line (but I didn't know it). After several months, the misalignment had worked its way down my whole spine, because my body was compensating. One of my legs ended up being an inch shorter than the other! My chiropractor was able to show me different stretches and "exercises" to get everything straightened out. Running became a lot easier for me after that--and I've never been a runner!

Libertino, I know what you mean. Injuries are frustrating like hell. Today I went back to the gym, I was not allowed to do the WOD (workout of the day), but I did the 1600 meter warm up run, and it did not hurt. So it was great, after the warm up I was doing an upper body workout with the machines in the gym. It felt better than nothing, but it is not my way of working out. For a while I need to stick to this. I have seen on your profile you are doing intermittent fasting. How is it going for you? I tried it a couple of times too, but I use bulletproof coffee in the mornings till 3 pm.

Eden, I never visited a chiropractor. I am really scared of them. Your story is amazing, but I still do not dare to see one with my back problem. I am trying to book an MRI scan in my home country, because I will be there in the middle of April. So at least soon enough I will know what it is exactly.

2 and half years ago I was duagnosed with thoracic degenerative dusc disease. Incorrectly thought to be a pinched nerve since I started being symptomatic as a teenager. When I was diagnosed my reflexes were wrong. My arms were constantly numb. The pain was non responsive to and painkillers including injected morphine (upside being no chance of addiction. It was something to do with the damage of the nerves so close to the spine). I had originally been afraid of MS because I was dropping things (afraid to hold my children) and my arms and hands didn't always work how I wanted. Typing, especially, was an experience. I was told I would need surgery. I went to a chiropractor and he took his own xrays. Between him and physical therapy today the pain is considerably less. My arms have only occassional tingle of numbness and only rarely will a hand or finger not move at the right speed. I havdn't dropped anything in ages. I haven't had surgery. The damage, of course is still there. The condition is progressive, but the symptoms have all but vanished besides the pain. I will probably still need surgery some day, and eventually the symptoms will creep back in. But I'm looking at years or even decades now rather then months. Don't discount chiropractors. However DO find a good one. One well recommended with a good education and history of practice.

CalynLZ, I am really sorry you had to go through so much pain and struggling due to your thoracic problem. I am sure it was and sometimes it is still really hard. I think in the US there might be many great chiropractors, but here in Europe I do not here about them too much. So I am a little bit sceptical with some of them here. I used to live in the US, but at that time I did not need one. Now, I am in Europe and I do not think I will find a good one here. I think you have made a good decision you did not go under surgery, if you could feel better without it. I do hope your condition won't worsen and you won't need surgery. It seems to be so many of us are struggling with back pain. I never thought it is an issue for many people.

It's a progressive condition, so it will worsen, but I'll put off surgery as long as possible because, obviously, taking a knife to the spine is never a great idea if there's other options, lol. In the US Chiropractors are doctors and regulated just like any other practice. It's unfortunate the same is not true in Europe. I have some friends who live(d) in Europe and a couple who use(d) Chiropractors there, but at least one has complained about the practice not being regulated and that you have to do your research to find a good one. I hope it gets better.

I used to get shots in the back from skiing and acrobatic injury's. I believe the doctor is right ....your back needs to rest and recuperate. It doesn't happen like that...it takes a few weeks. If it persists lets say allot longer u might have a bone in your spine that popped out and is pressing on nerves. I would never ever have back surgery. I go to a chiropractor which has been wonderful. Back pain hurts...hope just resting it will help it.

CalynLZ, I like your optimism and I do agree everyone should avoid surgery until they are able to function without it. I did not know that chiropractors are doctors in the US, they are definitely not in Europe (I am not sure about in the UK, they might have different regulations, but in most European countries they do not have to be doctors). Maybe this is the reason, I heard really successful stories about their practises mainly in the US.

Hi Daffyduck, thanks for your input. Yeah I am trying to be easy on my back. I might need to learn to be more patient with myself. That is the hardest part.

Hope you feel better soon so you can get back on track. :)

Springskinny, thank you very much. I am trying to do my best and give myself enough time to heal, but at the same time I am doing what I can to stay fit.
