<< On eating with friends and starting a 100 day challenge >>

This will be a longer journal entry but here we go:

Alrighty, now that it is Monday I can say that this weekend was rough. It is was the weekend before school started and the weekend where all of my friends were back in town all at once. So, naturally, there were all different kinds of parties/get together to attend and because we are all broke it was a potluck and BYOB kind of situation. I had Taco Night Friday night, game night Saturday night, and Sunday I went to a Black's BBQ in Lockhart, TX *really famous*. The challenge for me this weekend was how to navigate tacos and drinking and delicious, amazing, melt-in-your-mouth brisket all without resorting back to my old, "eat everything in sight" ways.

Friday: Taco Night
It was a BYOB situation so I picked up some Budweiser Select 55. It tastes nasty but it only has 55 calories per bottle and it could be something I can drink along with everyone else. The thing that scared me was the taco selection. I spoke with my friend and host of the party before hand and got her on board with my new dedication to fitness and she was thrilled. She agreed that she would make some ground turkey along with the ground beef to put in the tacos and I agreed ahead of time that no matter what, I'd limit myself to 2 tacos and no more. So it didn't turn out quite as badly as I thought. I tracked my food and calories and while it was higher than normal, it wasn't crazy out-of-the-ballpark bad.

Saturday: Game night/potluck
Stuck to water all night as my drink and avoided soda like the plague. I brought a veggie platter to share and I loaded myself up on those mostly. Still had a lot and I know I missed logging in food because I couldn't stop in the middle of scatagories to log in the artichoke dip that I ate but, overall, I think I did well.

Sunday: BBQ
Ok, this one I did a little bad because I skipped breakfast in order to prepare myself for the BBQ place which was delicious and worth every bite. After, I was full all the way through dinner time so a small apple was able to last me. So I basically had one big meal for the day which I know is contrary to everything every health book says to do but I was able to stay within my calorie range.

I think hanging out with friends is harder than it seems. I never realized how much of our social interactions revolve around food and drink. But I thank my lucky stars that my friends are understanding and supportive of what I'm trying to do. I will just have to be open and honest with them the next time something like this comes up.

This brings me to the 100 day challenge.
First, watch this video which inspired me:

If you don't like clicking on random links it is about a woman who tracked her progress of going to a gym for 100 days straight. The difference in her mood from day 1 to day 100 was simply amazing and I'm hoping to replicate those results. So, I've decided to go to the gym for 100 days straight starting today, January 13, 2014. My 100th day will be April 22nd, 2014 and I've got check-ins scheduled every 25 days just to see how I'm doing. I will definitely write journals more often than every 25 days but those will be dedicated to my experiences.

I'm committing to go despite rain/shine/illness/pain/motivation <<< That is a big one! At the end of 100 days I will weigh myself to see my results and reflect on how I feel and what I feel like. Not all victories are scale victories but come in pants fitting better and you feeling better right? I'm starting Day #1 at 408lbs

If you want to join in this or do your own mini 7 day or 30 day or 90 day run let me know and we can compare notes. If you have any advice/suggestions they are always welcome.

Wish me luck!

You are super cool! Look how great you did! You are an inspiration to me because when I read your first paragraph, I was imaging myself in your spot and wondering how to handle it! You did absolutely fantastic. Portion control was the key and healthy ingredients. Tacos can be very healthy and it sounds like your's were! If you like wine, you can have Merlot, which is fat-free. I limit myself to two 5 oz glasses. The calories are more than the beer you drank, but it's non-fat. I have to say, you really made my night with your post!

I've learned that as long as you are drinking something, people don't care what it is. Any alcohol is pure carbs and for me at least, carbs are what keep me from losing. You'll find what works for you. Great work over the weekend and I love the 100 day challenge idea.

I find what is most difficult at parties is not being included in the drinking/eating, not so much that I want to eat. You were smart to pick up the lower calorie beer (even though it is "nasty"...lol) and to speak with your hostess ahead of time. That's a prime example of planning ahead of time...what we need to do in order to succeed. Congratz!

MO, I watched the video you posted of LaKeisha! I googled her and found the site of her daily videos. Go to giveit100.com and right now LaKeisha is on the main page. I want to watch her videos one by one, when I get time. It is inspirational. Thanks for that. Good luck in your 100 day challenge!
