Sorry I don't have a picture for this...

So for years I've added sugar substitute to my coffee because I like it a little sweet and normally that sweetener is Sweet N Low Brand. However, since being out of work started taking a major toll on our finances, there have been cut backs to our grocery budget and one of those things was sweetener. So, I switched from Sweet N Low to the Great Value No Calorie Sweetener, distributed by Walmart, as it was a bit cheaper.

Well, today, I was trying to find the nutrition information for it in the food search but it didn't come up, so, that led me to do some research, and what I discovered was seriously disturbing and probably the reason I have so many issues with my stomach.

So, here is what I found out about this Great Value Brand No Calorie Sweetener...it contains sodium cyclamate (I was expecting either aspartame or sucralose) and in 1970 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned Sodium Cyclamate because it caused bladder cancer in lab rats. They were unable to determine if it caused bladder cancer in humans because they stopped allowing it to be sold in the US, and subsequently quit testing it for dangers.

Here's the thing though, it is still manufactured in the US and then imported and sold in Canada at Walmart. And something I noticed today, is a warning on the box that reads, "This sweetener should only be used on the advice of a physician"

WTF? I mean really WT actual F? If that's the case, then why isn't it sold behind the pharmacy wall instead of in the food aisles with the other sweeteners? And Why hasn't the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada followed suit with the FDA and banned this seemingly poisonous, cancer causing sweetener? But more importantly, why is the FDA allowing it to still be manufactured, when they banned it almost 50 years ago??

My biggest lesson in all of this...
READ LABELS!! ALWAYS READ THE LABELS. that's all

I will be using up the rest of the box I have and switching over to the Lakanto brand, as the monk fruit/Erythritol combination doesn't seem to be a deadly choice for human consumption.

Oh, and just FYI, I updated the food search and this Great Value Brand No Calorie Sweetener can now be found in the search under "No Calorie Sweetener," just in case you are still bravely using it.

I kind of like Sodium Cyclamate. I remember Dr. Atkins being quite upset when it was withdrawn in the US he felt like it was the sugar lobby who influenced the decision. I have some in my cupboard and use it. But duh if you think it may give you issues switch. There days there are so many good options available that was not there say 15 years ago. Nice to see your journal Teravela. I hope you have a good diet day today
