jsfantome's Journal, 31 Oct 10

been thinking ahead towards the holidays...but not so much about food issues, as being on a tight budget this year. (as I am sure are lots of you!) been looking online for some inexpensive, homemade type ideas that will speak my love to those I can give to this season...if you have any easy ideas please let me know. I am kind of 'crafty' - have tried a bunch of things...but not 'great' at any one in particular. So, I am open about trying something...just not sure how I will do. (always wish I had learned, but I don't knit or crochet, though.) Thanks in advance! Love.

I crossstitched some Christmas ornaments one year and that was fun and easy. You reminded me I want to crossstitch a present for my oldest daughter for Christmas.

I like the idea of the ornaments. I have several different ornaments that people have made for me over the years. I think it is touching and when I get them out in December I get to spend a little time reminiscing about them and our friendship/love. Plus with something like that you don't really have to worry about whether or not it will match someones decor. And personally I would rather have something from someone that they put some time and effort into rather than something they just picked up at the mall.

my daughter suggested the clear ornaments that you put paint inside and swirl...anyone done that? how did they come out?

Never done clear ornaments with paint inside, but have put pictures inside of them with ribbon and painted the outside with the year. :) Sorry not much of a crafty person either.

I made jelly for my book club ( jalapeno-it was my first attempt and I didn't want to waste good ingredients until I knew I had it down) I was thinking about making favored olive oils for some of my other friends. This year I am taking nice family pictures and getting frames like "sisters" , "family" etc. and giving them a framed candid picture for under $20. Those are my ideas for this year.

I have made the clear ornaments with the paint swirled in and I thought they turned out pretty darn cute. They are pretty cheap and you can give people a set...You could combine that idea with Terris and put the year on the outside or even something like...Merry Christmas, With Love, (and then your family name.) We used acrylic paint and the clear glass ornaments. I made mine pink, silver and white for my pink tree... :)

thanks Sassy - that's another idea I was contemplating. Found a couple of really cute pics from when my kids were little (one for each) and a favorite from the past year. Was planning on having them put in a two picture frame (one on each side) for the 'grandparents' gifts. Also - thanks Pinky for your feed back! I am thinking of trying these ornaments. Am going to pick up some supplies and a dozen clear ornaments - and give it a swirl!!! LOL! (couldn't help myself!)

I took all the old family photos, slides, newspaper clippings, everything on a dvd.My mom ,sisters, everyone just loved it. They have machines at Wal mart and pharmacy's.It is very inexpensive, about $3.00 a dvd. They last forever. My parents eyes are not the best it makes it something they can enjoy still.
