TJSloan's Journal, 19 May 13

I've calculated it and since starting the Bydureon on or around 3/28/13 to present, I have lost 8 pounds total. Now, I'm not saying it's all the Bydureon, but at least it gives me a time frame of events. Approximately 2 weeks ago, I started having itching at the injection site as well as something like inflammation. One site did have mild bruising, but I could have caused that by scratching or rubbing too hard. I also noticed nodules that do occasionally itch. Also about 2 weeks ago, I started experiencing a change in appetite and nausea. I have called the company to talk with them about these things and we are agreed that I will be talking with my Dr. I did ask about the time frame of these "side effects" and the timing is about right. Since it's a once a week injection, it would need time to build up a steady supply of the medication in my system, 6-8 wks is about the average time. I have a Dr's appointment in June which I will be talking with him about these events.

I am glad you have a plan of attack. Now if you have to stop taking the injections, will you have to do it slowly. Will there be withdrawal symptoms? I don't know much about these injections and am just curious. Are they for weight loss or is it for your diabetes? Again just curious.

The injections are for diabetes, but it's not insulin injections. Technically, I am "pre-diabetes", I just don't say that, because if I do, then it allows me to drink the daily coke and eat all the snickers and Reeces Cups I want. Some of the side-effects listed on the medication is a change in appetite and weight loss. This was just one of the reasons Steve wanted to put me on it. The other reason, was that my sugar wasn't as controlled...though understand my A1C has only gotten into the 7's. End of June is my appointment with Steve. To be continued.

How long have you been 'pre-diabetic'? I'm insulin dependent---I have what some doctors refer to us type 1.5---adult onset juvenile diabetes. I take lantus (a long acting insulin first thing in the morning). Oh and how's school going? Finals over? Dessa

Since 2007, I think. My A1C has never been as high as 8, though it has been between 7 and 8. I told my Dr up front that I refused to give myself shots, that I wanted to do it by diet change and oral medications. I broke down when I realized that everytime I dropped below 220, I'd just right back up to 230. Went in, determined to ask him for diet pills or something that would help me get the weight off and keep it off. That's when he asked if I was willing to let him get aggressive with my diabetes. He wanted to me to try this new medication, some people who were on it, had indeed lost weight. To me, having to do injections was the end of the world. On one hand, it still is. I hate having to give myself the injections, especially now that the side effects are happening...the nodules, the irritation and itching at the injection sites. Either way, I'll have a list of things to discuss with him when I see him at the end of June. School is good. Finals were done the week I left for our cruise. I got an A in Nutrition. Cruise was over and I came back to start a 6wk summer course in Classical Mythology. My final for that class is 6/19. It's an interesting class, but golly-gee does he talk fast. I have our first quiz on Wednesday this week...a little nervous, but then I usually am for the first quiz. So, your diabetes, by you saying Type 1.5...well, you've said it was adult onset of juvenile diabetes. I'm assuming that means that you will always be on diabetic medications? I'm actually on the Bydureon and Janument. Both are only available right now in brand name. Not sure about Janumet, but I do know that Bydureon is not recommended for Type 1 diabetes. Thanks for asking!
