Caution: Rant unrelated to FS...Okay, so I live in a rural area where the properties are spread over several acres per neighbor...and the ranch next door sold to a couple who I thought were going to be great neighbors. But the woman is so odd. Her husband more than makes up for her lack of social civility, but nonetheless, here goes...

The back story is, the last neighbor who lived there used to borrow stuff from us, like our trash container, etc. This new woman insists that she owns the container because it was on her property when she moved in...leaving us without a trash can. :(

She told my husband that she'd paid for both so she's going to come on to our property and take it. My husband has little patience for stupidity. He just said, "Nope, it was originally part of our property and paid for."

I just roll my eyes at petty stuff like this. Why would anyone come into a community where people are nice and helpful and just try to bully people?

I have my speech ready when I see her. I plan to attack with kindness and reason. I will share about the aspects of community building and how great it is to live within the proximity of people who can count on you.

I have always believed that there is a spiritual milady when people act out like this. Meaning, they most likely suffered growing up therefore they just have a lot of wreckage they drag along with them into their new relationships.

Thank you for reading this rant. During the time it took to write this, my husband took the trash container to her and said, "There you go, welcome to the neighborhood."

Problem solved.

I agree, most people don't plan to act like jerks, its usually some fear or sadness that makes them that way. Sometimes you can help these people and sometimes not. If you can't it is better to avoid them and not get drawn into their negativity.

We are living in a society of folks who grew up with the 'winning through intimidation' mentality ~ good, bad or ugly ~ it's great that you refuse to lower yourself to their level. Hopefully she'll come around and some day y'all will laugh about this over a cup of coffee. MH and I owned a ranch for years and it was always interesting getting the new 'city folk' to settle down and understand 'country living' but they usually come around. Winter's coming ~~ one good ice storm and she'll have to make friends to stave off the cabin fever :-)

I wish I was your neighbor! I long to live in the country and feel a sense of community. We could then grow organic side by side :)

Thank you Fatoldlady, Bella and Linz for your comments. I wish you could come have dinner with us and laugh about it with us in person, but for now, I'll be happy to know that my buds have our back!
